Atlanta Silverbacks Soccer Camp
LYNN HAVEN - The Atlanta Silverbacks are one of the top USL soccer programs in the nation.
This week, the Renegade Sports Center is hosting a Striker/Goalkeeper camp where the Silverbacks teach the kids how to score from close range or block the shot.
“You know you watch for their eyes, but their eyes can lie, the foot can lie,” goalkeeper Ben Hall said. “The best thing I do is just watch the ball. Well it can lie to you.”
Hall is a junior goalkeeper at Marianna High School. He came to this camp to sharpen his skills, but knows you can’t trust a striker.
The keepers are stuck between a 14x8 goal and have a split second to either dive left, dive right or get out of the way.
“They have to be very brave,” Silverback Greig Munro said. “Their technique has got to be excellent.”
Keep as low as you can and be ready to spring out and open yourself up. You gotta risk your body being a keeper, especially in these situations.
Thirteen year old Caleb Watson tells us the striker has the easy job. He just has to kick the ball and not get in the way of the thing.
But Watson says, he’s learned as easier way to score.
“[Greig] taught us how to fake kick then just try and score,” Watson said. “You basically want to run around more. If they run at you kinda chip it over them.”
“You kinda gotta think about shooting to the corners,” striker Katie Carroll said. “You can’t shoot right in the middle or it will go straight to the keeper.”
The goalkeepers job can be easy too. Just stand there as the ball misses wide.
