Bay 32, Mosley 30
PANAMA CITY, Fla. - It was a high school football classic Friday night that had a little bit of everything, drama, perseverance and improbability as Bay High School rallied in the closing seconds to beat Mosley High School 32-30.
Cue Josh Sostheim. Eight seconds remaining. Tornadoes down one. A 30-yard field goal is all that seperates Bay starting the season 2-0.
Tied at 23 with just over 3:24 to play, Mosley’s Enrique Davis blistered the Bay High defense with with his third touchdown of the night, giving the Dolphins a 7-point lead.
But Bay responded on it’s ensuing drive, Bay quarterback Bert Reed completed a 38-yard pass to D.J. Davenport. That set-up a 2-yard touchdown run by Reed cutting the score to 30-29.
Tornadoes Head Coach Mike Healey elected to go for the two-point conversion instead of a game-tying extra-point.
Reed optioned to the left to running back LaDarius Hand who was stuffed inches short of the endzone by Mosley’s John Darwin.
Now here’s the improbable. With 51 seconds left, on the ensuing kick-off, it’s Bert Reed… the kicker! Reed boots a perfect bounce as Davenport recovers.
After a 22-yard scramble by Reed, and a Dolphin personal foul, the ball was placed at the Mosley 11 yard line. Then pushed back after an illegal forward pass by Reed.
Sostheim stepped onto the field, with 8 seconds to go, looking at a 30-yard field goal. He split the uprights to cap off the Tornadoes thrilling 32-30 win.
