Bay Dedicates Gym To Coach

PANAMA CITY - Just before tip-off of the Bay-Rutherford basketball game on Friday night, a little piece of history was memorialized.

Bay High School dedicated the new gymnasium in honor of John L. Cobb.  Coach Cobb was hired as the Tornadoes head football coach in 1972.  Four years later, he led them to the counties first football state championship in 1976.

“At one time, the only named people were people that were dead,” Cobb said.  “I wouldn’t want to die to be here, but I do appreciate them taking the time.  For some reason they picked me.  There’s so many good people gone through bay high school.”

After the dedication, three other Bay High Alumni were inducted into the Bay High School Sports Hall of Fame.  Those three include the late Henry Davis, a 1973 graduate who lettered in football and track, Betty Wachob, a 1963 Bay graduate who coached Bay tennis for 17 years, and Mike McCormick, a 1977 graduate who played for Cobb on the 1976 championship team.
