Bay’s Reed says “Yes” to the Gators
PANAMA CITY, Fla. - Bay High School quarterback Bert Reed verbally committed Wednesday to play for the Florida Gators next season.
Reed is a three-year starter at quarterback for the Tornadoes. As a sophomore, the 5-foot-11, 160 lbs. kid quarterbacked Bay to an undefeated regular season.
Reed said that he has been in constant contact with Florida Head Coach Urban Meyer before the season ever started.
“He and Coach Heater, the recruiting coach, call me often,” Reed said. “So it was good to give him the good news.”
Bay finished 4-6 last season, but the team is much improved this year (5-2) with Reed putting up 600 yards rushing and passing for just under 800 yards. But next season, Meyer wants him to catch passes as a wide receiver from Tim Tebow.
“I think my hands are pretty good right now,” Reed said. “I wish I could play receiver right now, but I think the best spot for me in high school is quarterback.
“I feel like I can fit in perfect in the offensive scheme. [Meyer] said he wanted to be the fastest team in the nation and that’s where I want to be. I’m a fast kid and can fit in pretty good with that program.”
Bay Head Coach and University of Florida graduate and player Mike Healey is all smiles knowing that his quarterback made the right choice.
“I would have been happy if played for anybody in the state of Florida where his parents can go watch him play,” Healey said. “It’s not too far away from home if he gets lonely, has problems, he can come home and visit.
“He can put his feet under the dinning table and eat with his parents. It’s very helpful to be close to home. I’m glad he picked a school close to home.”
Reed also considered Alabama, West Virginia, NC State and Florida State.
