Be Aware of What You Could Tear
PANAMA CITY- “Our coach tells us, do what you know. He doesn’t want us going over our weight, try to show off. He wants us to get in here and do what we’ve gotta do,” said Bay sophomore Trent Goss.
Doing what you have to do in a responsible manner can protect weightlifters from possible injury.
It’s just one of the many sporting activities that an athlete can get hurt if they don’t follow some safety tips.
“Just try to warm up and stretch as much as you can before you lift and stretch after you lift also,” said Rutherford senior David Hate.
“Everyday before class we stretch, we do like seven or eight different stretches,” said Mosley sophomore Justin Nguyen.
“We mainly do a lot of stretching; we do a lot of warm-ups. We come in here about 30 minutes before we actually go to do our lifts, we do our warm-ups and stretches, so we don’t pull anything,” Goss said.
So stretching and going through thorough warm-ups are a must before lifting any amount of weight, and lifters know the consequences of not following these procedures.
“It’s very important because you can pull any type of muscle. You can pull a bicep, tricep and you can pull a chest muscle and that can knock you out of the whole season because the season only last three or four weeks,” Hate said.
“You can pull a muscle, rip a pec. We had a guy a couple of years ago that went to bench and his pec tore in half because he didn’t do his stretches, your muscles stay tight and when you go to bench, they can tear,” Goss said.
So stretching and warming up can decrease a lifters chance of getting injured, but you always have to be cautious of injuries even if you’ve stretched properly. That’s why you always have some help beside you.
“Our spotters are always with us, we never lift alone, ever. Not it practices, not ever. They even do our stretches with us. Without our spotters, we can get crushed, even die if it hits us on our throats,” said Goss.
Weightlifting is meant to be a fun and enjoyable sport, but you have to stay aware of your surroundings all the time.
“Every second, because there could be somebody doing a clean and jerk, fall backwards, and the weight hits you. You always have to be paying attention and you always have to have your mind in the right place at the right time,” said Goss.
