Benching the Competition

SPRINGFIELD- Girls weightlifting teams from Bay, Bozeman, and Rutherford met up today at the Rutherford High School weight room for an early season clash.

The meet is the first of the year for Bay and Rutherford, and the second for Bozeman, but it didn’t seem matter that this was one of the first bouts of the season; the event still brought a ton of energy and enthusiasm.

“It was really exciting, way more girls than I thought would be here,” said Rutherford senior Alicia Pilcher.

Today’s weightlifting meet offered a lot of heavy muscle building action for these girls and the spectators, but what really is the most exciting aspect of weightlifting competitions?

“I enjoy the rush that I get from weightlifting. I love to be around everybody cheering and screaming. I like being in the weight room and cheering so much, competition mostly,” said Bozeman sophomore Kasey Franks.

“The challenge, I didn’t think that I would be able to do 130, but then I got it and I was so excited,” said Bay senior Brianna Clayton.

“Hearing everyone cheer pumps you up more, so I did more weight than I thought I could do and that was pretty cool,” said Pilcher.

Sometimes lifting all the heavy weights can be a problem, so finding motivation is the key.

“The way I get motivated is I think about what makes me mad the most, and I kind of want to remind myself of how much I really want to win this,” Franks said.

“My mom really motivates me a lot and my team members and my coach most of all, Coach Anderson. I have weightlifting class and he motives me a lot in class. He tells me you can do it, stop saying you can’t do it, and things like that,” Clayton said.

After a long afternoon of lifting the most amount of weight your body will allow, sometimes the soreness might be a little too much the next morning.

“When I get home, I’m ok. The first two days I could barely even hit the gas peddle when I was steering, I was so sore. The morning you wake up and I was like, mom I can’t move, I don’t want to go to school, but after a while you really see your muscles and it gets easier, it’s nice,” said Pilcher.

The Bozeman girl’s squad came out with the win. They tallied 41 points, it’s they’re first weightlifting win.  Bay put up 32, and Rutherford totaled 23 points.
