Billfish Tournament - 1st Weigh-In
PANAMA CITY BEACH - Money will not be the only thing reeled in Saturday night during the 24th Annual Invitational Billfish Tournament at Bay Point.
The scales opened at 6:00 p.m. and closed at 10:00 on Friday. The action didn’t pick up until around 8:30 p.m. when the Wynsong reeled in a 36-pound wahoo.
On the first night that the scale is open, the crew that brings in the heaviest fish wins a $10,000 bonus.
Brittany Jean came in a 9:30 p.m. followed by Ole Miss, led by fisherman Ken Lovelace. Lovelace caught a 92.2-pound tuna to win the bonus.
Also on board the Ole Miss was Chef Emeril Lagasse.
“This is one of the great tournaments in the south at Bay Point here,” Lagasse said. “We enjoy fishing this and I certainly do. It’s kind of a half relaxation, half challenge. We’re going back out. We’re not going to mess around. We’re going to cook a quick steak and head out and fish it again.”
Ole Miss’ tuna in is worth at least $10,000 and could bring in as much as $211,000 if it can hold up Saturday.
The biggest blue marlin reeled could be worth $100,000.
