Blountstown Prepares For Baker

BLOUNTSTOWN - To no surprise, the Blountstown Tigers football team is making it’s final prepartations for this year’s District 2 state championship run.

Blountstown begins the post-season Friday night against Class 1-2B runner-up Baker High School.

The Tigers have made the playoffs for three consecutive season. But what’s more impressive, the team has not lost a regular season game in it’s last 33 tries.  That spans over three seasons.

“We graduated 18 seniors last year,” Blountstown head coach Greg Jordan said.  “That left quite a bit of uncertainty of how our season would go.  But, all they know is how to win.”

The success in the regular season has not carried over to the post-season.

Last season, the Tigers lost in the semi-finals for Ocala Trinity Catholic.  A year before that, another disappointing loss.  This time in the state championship against Fort Meade.

“It hurts really bad, we put our heart into it,” quarterback Cory Cox said.  “Wwe work all summer and all year.  It’s a 12 month sport ‘round here and when you come up short, it ain’t really acceptable here.  We just gotta keep fighting.”

“Fort Meade was a team that had been to the state championship seven times without winning,” Jordan said.  “I guess that was just their year.”

This year might just be the Tigers year.  The team certainly has the offense with junior quarterback Cory Cox taking the snaps.  Cox has passed for over 1,150 yards with the majority divided between wide receivers Jon Lockhart and Garry Reed.

Tigers also have a ground game with Ryan Baker and Timothy Copeland combining nearly 2,000 yards on foot.

Blountstown High kicks-off at 7:30 pm at Bowles Field aginst Baker in Blountstown.
