Bobby Bowden interview with Kyle Burger
PANAMA CITY BEACH - Florida State head football coach Bobby Bowden played golf in the FSU Panama City 17th Annual Golf Classic on Friday at the Hombre Golf Club. After golfing, Bowden sat down with News 13’s Kyle Burger.
Kyle Burger:
Is there a quarterback controversy with Drew Weatherford and Xavier Lee. Who will you go with?
Bobby Bowden:
Both of them are the same. Both of them will be juniors next year. Both are pretty good football players. So we have 15 days of spring training, we’ll line them up. Right now, Drew is the number one quarterback. But they all have 15 days to see if they can take his job.
KB: Any thoughts of a two quarterback system?
BB: Not interested.
KB: What are your thoughts on new offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher and the rest of the new staff, including Chuck Amato?
BB: This spring we got more new coaches than we have old coaches. But there’s a lot of enthusiasm. We really hired great quality. We probably have as good of a staff as anyone in the country. That doesn’t mean we’re going to win every game next year, but I guarantee you were heading in the right direction.
KB: It’s your 32nd season coaching. Is it more exciting this year with a whole new staff?
BB: Well, it’s more mystic to it. It makes it exciting. They’re excited. Anytime you got a change there’s excitement that occurs with it. That’s what’s happening right now.
KB: What did you see Bay High School’s Bert Reed to offer him a scholarship?
BB: I haven’t talked to him since we signed him. But I was mighty happy to get him. Because he has what we’re looking for as a receiver. I like ex-quarterbacks. Number one, they can throw the dog-gone ball. So you have your receivers throw the ball. But he has a lot of agility and speed. Great attitude, great personality. I think he’ll be a great asset to our program.
KB: Do you see playing time in his freshman year? Returning kicks?
BB: It could be. We’re looking for someone like that. We lost Chris Davis who was our punt returner and Lorenzo Booker who returned kick-offs a lot. You’re always looking for young freshman that is stable enough to go out and play his first year.
KB: What’s your spring schedule look like?
BB: After spring training is when we start our booster tour. I’ve got 25 speaking engagements all over the state of Florida, even in Georgia and in North Carolina. We’ve been doing that since I’ve been here. We have a good time. We play golf, have a banquet. Then I’ve got other engagements to.
KB: You come to Panama City often?
BB: Anne and I have been coming to Panama City when it was just she and I. Then it was she and I and our six kids. The it was she and I and our 21 grand children. Then she and I, six kids, their spouses then the 21. So we’ve gone from two to 35.
KB: How about the Spring Break?
BB: That’s for another generation. That’s not my generation.
