Chipola Softball Crowned National Champs!
PLANT CITY - Chipola College’s softball team had two chances to win the NJCAA National Championship on Saturday. The top-seeded Lady Indians (57-6) needed every out to win the championship 6-3 in eight innings over North Idaho.
Since Chipola was in the winner’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament, North Idaho had to win twice. North Idaho took the first game 5-2.
“It was tough but these girls they battled,” Chipola head coach Belinda Hendrix said. “We pulled the sophomores aside and we talked about how hard they worked.
“They rallied together, picked the freshman up and went with it. It was up and down the whole game. We had to battle the whole game. They came back and tied it in the bottom of the 7th. We had Brittany Mitten on the mound, I knew she wanted it.”
The win marks the first-ever national championship of any kind at Chipola College. This after the school had a record year with four state championships - men’s and women’s basketball, softball and baseball.
The baseball team still has a chance to capture a national championship in the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colo., on May 26.
