Chipola Wins World Series!
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Chipola College’s baseball team brought home the second national championship for the school this year. The Indians beat New Mexico 7-3 on Saturday night for the title.
Chipola beat Spartanburg 27-12 to get a berth in the championship game.
Chipola pitcher Ryan Chaffee pitched a complete game against New Mexico, striking out eight including the final out of the game.
“They play very well together,” Chipola head coach Jeff Johnson said. “You don’t have any egos on this team. They’re worried about winning for Chipola College and not worried about all the other things.”
It’s the first baseball national championship won by the school. It’s also the first time a Florida school won the title since Hillsborough in 1988.
“It was the first time a team in the state of florida has won in awhile, I think there’s a reason for that,” Johnson said. “We’re proud to go out and represent Florida in a good positive way.”
This academic year, Chipola College has won four state championships - women’s and men’s basketball, softball and baseball - and two national championships - softball and baseball.
