Cycling Enthusiasts Shocked By Landis’ Results
PANAMA CITY, Fla. - Only five days ago, American Floyd Landis was celebrating his Tour de France win. Now, he’s suspended after he testing for high levels of testosterone during the race.
Landis told his side of the story at a news conference on Friday. He responded to allegations of doping be the cycling officials.
He denies using performance-enhancing substances to win the race, saying his levels of testosterone are naturally occuring.
The situation comes as a shock to some cycling enthusiasts, since Panama City Beach hosts at least three triathlons every year.
Kevin Bramlett, owner of Steve’s Bike Shop, said that he’s heard people coming through the door talking about Landis’ heroic charge during the 17th stage comeback. Now, all the buzz is about the failed drug test.
“Everyday we get customers in our store waiting to know what the latest is,” Bramlett said.
Bramlett said the 17th stage comeback has reason to look suspicious.
“We’re always upset that anyone my have used any substance to help them win,” Bramlett said. “Our opinion is that all the athletes are fit and capable of winning the tour on any day. It’s just unfortunate to happen to an American.”
Landis has agreed to undergo any tests necessary to prove his innocence. If there is another above-average test result, he could be stripped of his victory. Which means Spain’s Oscar Periero will get the title.
