Deep Sea Fishing with the Shriners
GULF OF MEXICO - Over 50 Shriners grew their sea legs and came with strong stomachs Thursday for the 8th annual “Fishing For The Kids” Shaddai Temple deep sea fishing trip.
For the past eight years, the Shriners have been doing this fundraiser to add more transportation buses to the Shriners 22 hospitals.
“[The water’s] kinda calmed down now, Shaddai Treasurer Ron Bass said. “But it’s all part of fishing.”
“Look at the water, it’s beautiful,” fisherman Michael Flowers said. “Hopefully I’ll blow up here real quick.”
We’ll get back to Michael later.
The Shriners are fishing off the Florida Queen, primarily for snapers, B-liners, trigger fish and grouper. Squid is the best way to get ahold of one these fish.
“You got to cut [the squid] up small so the smaller B-liners will be able to eat it,” deck hand John Holman said. “The big pieces you can’t hook’em.”
Last year, it was said, that our own Chief Forecaster Jerry Tabatt realed in the big one.
“Jerry caught the biggest fish last year believe it or not,” Captain Bobo Hubbs said. “Nobody believes him, he’s got to get it on camera.”
Jerry was back out trying to prove his nay-sayers wrong. He did real in about 25 fish, several doubles.
But the big winner was Flowers, realing in a 45-pound grouper.
All the fish caught were turned into the fish market for a fish fry on Oct. 22.
