Emerald Coast Barracudas Try-Outs
LYNN HAVEN, Fla. - Women’s football. Those two words aren’t much of an oxy-moron in the Panhandle.
Still, some people can’t grasp that concept.
“It is absolutely awesome,” Barracudas tackle Jessica Spooner said. “Of course we have those people who say ‘are you naked, are you wearing a g-string?’ No, we’re out here in full pads, playing full contact football.
“We’re beating the crap out of each other, getting bruised and banged up and loving every minute of it.”
The Emerald Coast Barracudas, members of the National Women’s Football Association, had it’s first-ever try-out Sunday afternoon at the Renegade Sports Center.
The Barracudas finished last season 1-7, but new head coach Cliff Spooner is looking to change that.
His team has plenty of talent. Several players were ranked tops in the nation last season. Wide receiver and corner back Megan Johnson was ranked number one among wide outs, and quarterback Lisa Boyce was ranked ninth in the nation.
Johnson has now become Assistant Coach Johnson due to motherhood.
Emerald Coast had so much talent, but lacked in numbers. The team started last season with 35 players on the roster, but finished the season with only 11 players.
“Our goal this season is to get 55 players,” Coach Spooner said. “We’re just trying to get anyone to come out right now. Whether it’s players, coaches or staff.”
The Barracudas season kicks-off in April.
