First Female Signed From Bozeman

SAND HILLS - Richard Bowen went down in the record books for being the first student athlete from The Deane Bozeman School to sign a national letter of intent to play a college sport.

He’ll suit up on the football field next season with Kentucky Wesleyan.

But even more history was made Thursday.

Kristy Young became the first female athlete to sign with a college.  She’ll be heading for Alabama Southern College (JUCO) on a full softball scholarship.

“Great step for our female athletic program at Bozeman,” head softball coach Denise Whitaker said.  “If there was anybody here I knew wanted to play ball, Kristy told me from the very beginning when she walked on this campus that is what she wanted to do.”

Young was a pitcher and third baseman for Bozeman.  She hit for a .456 average and was also the first Bozeman softball player to hit a home run, which she did twice.  Young also hit eleven doubles and batted in 18 runs.

But Alabama Southern was not the first school interested in her.

“I had an offer from a college I wasn’t crazy about,” Young said.  “[Coach Covin] contacted me, told me full ride.  I talked to her for about three hours.  We seemed to click.  I’m really excited.  The school is beautiful and it seems like a great opportunity.”

Alabama Southern is creating quite a name for itself in the panhandle.  Softball players from Bay, Mosely, Rutherford and Crestview have signed on with Southern.
