Going For The Gold!
PANAMA CITY, Fla. - Ames, Iowa, will be the home to 3,000 athletes for the first-ever Special Olympics USA National Games.
Eight athletes from Bay County, who will compete in the games on July 3-7, said their goodbyes to friends and family at the Panama City-Bay County Airport Saturday morning.
“We’re representing Bay County,” Shamika Curry, track & field participant, said. “That’s what we’re here for; to bring back the gold.”
These athletes make-up a portion of Team Florida, which is sending 106 competitors competing in 11 different events.
Of the eight athletes from Bay County, Luke Loberger, Mary Carden and Frances Alexander are the bowlers; Byron Smith and Shawn Pipken are the only two bocce players from the state; Tim Russell and Shamika Curry compete in track & field; and Amy Reid is the gymnast.
The athletes return to Panama City on July 8.
