Gulf Coast and Chipola Play for State Title!

MARIANNA – Gulf Coast had to overcome the jitters in the quarterfinals of the FCCAA state basketball tournament on Wednesday against Santa Fe.

The nerves went away quick in the Commodores semifinal game against Seminole.  Gulf Coast won easily, using its defense, 83-37.

“It kind of started this morning at the motel,” Gulf Coast coach Roonie Scovel said.  “We were just different, a little more settled and really excited to come play.”

The GCCC held a 37-12 lead at halftime.  SCC eventually scored its 10th at the 1:02 mark in the first half.

“I thought it showed in the first half,” Scovel said.  “I thought the second half kind of got sloppy.  Sometimes those big leads to that to you.”

Gulf Coast sophomore forward Shanae Cotton led the team in scoring with 14 points.

Chipola College beat Tallahassee in the other semifinal game 73-62.  Gekeela Clemmons led the Indians with 17 points.

The Commodores will play Chipola on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the FCCAA State Finals.
