Gulf Coast Departs To Winter Haven

PANAMA CITY - Gulf Coast Community College finished second in the conference, so it’s revenge time in the FCCAA state baseball tournament.

Last season, Miami-Dade ended the Commodores season.  It just so happens Gulf coast opens the tournament with the boys from south beach on May 4 in Winter Haven.

The GCCC players boarded the bus Wednesday morning on their way to the tournament.  The Commodores itinerary includes a stop at the University of Florida for practice Wednesday night.

The team will arrive in Winter Haven on Thursday with a five-game winning streak.

The difference from last year’s team to this year’s rowdy bunch is a handful of sophomores that experienced last year’s play-off run.

“Anytime you’re doing something for a second time, it becomes easier,” GCCC head coach Mike Kandler said.  “Our sophomores were there last year and know how the tournament is set up.

“They know the level of competition.  They’ve been thought the practice schedule.  I don’t think we’ll be intimidated by the environment itself.”

The Commodores will take on Miami-Dade on May 4 at 7p.m. EST.
