Gulf Coast Moves Into 2nd Place Tie

PANAMA CITY - A crucial two-game series in the Panhandle Conference got off to a slow start.  The first game between Gulf Coast Community College (26-15, 9-9) and Pensacola Junior College was rained out on Tuesday.  That game was re-scheduled for Thursday.

The game on Wednesday went off without a hitch with Gulf Coast winning 7-2.  Pitcher Devin Copely picked up the win.  GCCC improved to 9-9 in the conference, tied with Pensacola for the coveted second-seed.

The Commodores kept the Pirates off the scoreboard with a nice defensive play by centerfielder Alex Kubal.  PJC’s Joey Stevens singled to center.  D’Marcus Ingram tried to score from second, but Kubal gunned him down at the plate.

In the process, GCCC catcher Jake Sullivan seperated his left shoulder.  He played the game, but his status is questionable for Thursday.

The Commodores struck in the first inning.  With Kubal on first, Scott Beckwith lined to right field.  The right fielder Adron Chambers could not handle the hot shot.  It bounced off his knee and rolled to the wall.  Kubal scored from first to give the ‘Dores a 1-0 lead.  Beckwith advanced to third.

Sullivan then stepped in and hit a fly ball to left field deep enough to score Beckwith from third.

Gulf Coast travels to Pensacola on Thursday to take on the Pirates at 5 p.m.
