Johnson Wins HR Derby
DOTHAN, Ala. - Local sluggers were at Pittman’s Park in Dothan for the 13th Annual Wiregrass Home Run Derby on Saturday. Several professional players along with amateurs took part.
Former Mosley High School star turned first-round draft pick, Cody Johnson (Braves) won this thing last year as a high schooler hitting 23 home runs in the final round to win it.
Johnson did win this year, but the ball wasn’t flying out of the park like last year. He hit four home runs in the final round in terrible, windy conditions.
“Changing from the aluminum bat I used last year to the wooden bat this year made the difference,” Johnson said.
Other professionals in the contest were Philadelphia’s Wes Helmes, Gabe Gross (Brewers organization), and Casey Smith (Angels organization).
