Local Reaction to Sports’ Scandals

PANAMA CITY BEACH - Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick is supposed to be finding a way to score points against the toughest defenses in the NFL.

Instead, he’s planning a defense for his freedom from serious dog fighting charges.

San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds is one home runs shy of tying the all-time record.  But the will-be record is shadowed by the steroid allegations.

Last week, an NBA referee was accused of betting on games the he refereed.

We found out on Friday that young sports fans are turned off by seeing sports heroes get in trouble.

At Frank Brown Park, young athletes play the game they love.  Monte Reese, from Conyers, GA, said that his emotions change when he talks about pro athletes and scandal.

“You can’t really trust him any more,” Reese said.  “It’s not the same, the NBA, NFL, MLB.  It’s not the same anymore because all the athletes keep doing stupid stuff.”

Julie Moore, from Arkansas, is watching her boys Matt and Heath play ball.  She’s worried that type of disappointment might turn kids away from sports.

“A lot of parents will say why watch pro ball its fake or why look up to these people,” Moore said. “Look at what they’re doing behind the scenes.”

Brian Brennan, from New Orleans, said that kids should pick their role models wisely.  But, Brennan has a slightly different method.

“We were watching TV a while back and Dennis Miller has his kids watch Paris Hilton,” Brennan said.  “She’s the worst role model ever.  He tells his kids if you act like her, you’re going the wrong way.”

If Michael Vick is found guilty of the charges, he may not even have the opportunity for kids to watch him television.  And for father’s to say, don’t act like him.
