National Signing Day
PANAMA CITY - National Signing Day is an exciting time for a lot of young athletes. It’s a day when area youngsters decide their futures.
Several football players in the panhandle signed the dotted line on Wednesday.
It looks like Florida State swayed Bert Reed away from the Florida Gators. Reed was a longtime Florida commitment, but visited Tallahassee this past weekend where offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher and coach Bobby Bowden made him consider the ‘Noles. Fisher told Reed that he would be a major factor in the Seminoles offense next season.
Reed grew up cheering for Florida State and said that he’s not worried about the heat he would take for making the switch from blue and orange to garnet and gold.
“I didn’t feel any pressure coming from my inner-family, which matters the most,” Reed said. “But I’m sure there’s pressure and people are disappointed on the outside. The main thing, I’m a man of commitment so when I de-committed, I didn’t really like it.
“That’s the only thing I had a problem with was un-committing. I had to do what’s right for me. I felt like I did the right thing.”
In a little more clear-cut decision, Bay linebacker Brian Gilbert signed with the Naval Academy, in Annapolis, Maryland.
Gilbert will be a defensive end at the Academy. He also added that he’s looking forward to waking up and running at 5:00 a.m.
LYNN HAVEN - On the campus of Mosley High, one of the best running backs in the state, Enrique Davis, will play in the SEC for Tommy Tuberville’s Auburn Tigers.
Davis rushed for almost 1,080 yards and 16 touchdowns in his senior season. Davis ran for over 3,000 yards in two years of varsity ball.
Davis says he’s looking forward to playing for a school that has a tradition of great running backs over the years.
“This is great,” Davis said. “It’s a great opportunity to be able to go to a great school and I’m just happy to have the opportunity to play under great coaches and with great players.”
Three other Dolphins signed Wednesday. Linebacker Carlton Johnson who will join his teammate Davis on the plains at Auburn. Mosley running back Tommie Rogers, who rushed for over 3,000 yards in his high school career, signed with Jacksonville University. Strong Safety William Perry also signed with Jacksonville University.
PANAMA CITY BEACH – Arnold High School safety Quinn Sanders signed on Wednesday morning with the University of Charleston (West Virginia).
SPRINGFIELD – Rutherford High School had six players sign with Concordia College (Ala.); Rodney Morgan (DB/RB), Datwan Hartwell (OL/DE), Delorean Smith-Frazier (OL), Darien Wallace (LB/SS), Demond Thomas (FB/DT) and Layton Chambers (DE).
PORT ST. JOE – Port St. Joe QB/DB Michael Quinn signed with Alabama State University. Quinn scored 13 total touchdowns as an offensive player (four passing, nine rushing) and intercepted four passes on the defensive side of the ball.
Other players signing include: Blountstown’s Chase Cox signed with Shorter College, Marianna running back Phillip Sylvester signed with FAMU, Cottondale’s Tyler Addison signed with Charleston Southern, Cottondale’s Kelsy Roulhac and Marqenten Webb both signed with Merced Community College (Calif.).
