Panhandle Conference Honors
PANAMA CITY, Fla. - The baseball team at Gulf Coast Community College started the season under the leadership of a new head coach.
In his debut as the Commodore skipper, Mike Kandler has helped guide the team to it’s first state tournament appearance since 1998.
The Pandhandle Conference Co-Champions are ranked #1 in the state and #2 nationally.
It was announced this week that 10 GCCC players have earned All-Conference Honors, four of those on First-Team.
David Herndon (9-0, 2.04 ERA) and Steven Cheney (8-0, 1.07, 3 SVs) were conference pitcher and fireman of the year, respectively.
“We came a long way from last year and a lot of guys worked hard,” Herndon said. “The credit goes to Coach Kandler. The job he’s done with the pitchers, hitters, a big improvement from last year.”
Third baseman Justin Byler (.342, 11 HRs, 42 RBIs), and center fielder Stuart Haywood (.349, 38 runs, 29 RBIs) were the other two on the First-Team.
“Kandler coming here turned this program around,” Haywood said. “We’re just following [Kandler’s] lead. It’s an honor that other coaches would pick me, and vote for us, it’s an honor.”
