PSJ’s Kurnitsky Awarded Coach of the Year

PORT ST. JOE - Port St. Joe head basketball coach Derek Kurnitsky was awarded “Class 2A Coach of the Year” for the state of Florida by the Florida Dairy Farmers’ Association.

The Sharks finished the regular season 11-14; which won’t turn anybody’s heads.  But the six game winning-streak in the District and State playoffs caught much attention.

“It was surprising,” Kurnitsky said.  “I was in class and our secretary called and said you need to take this phone call.  It was a great feeling, it was exciting.”

Port St. Joe eventually lost the state championship game against Arlington Country Day to finish the season at 17-15.

“The award, I’m glad for it because of the publicity for Port St. Joe high school,” Kurnitsky said.  “I have two great assistants, 11 great kids who are the reasons I got the award.

“I didn’t do anything.  I didn’t shoot a hoop or make a free throw or make a lay-up or nothing.  It was all the kids.”

As Class 2A Coach of the Year, Kurnitsky is a finalist with the winners from the other five classifications for overall Florida Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year.

Coach “K” has been coaching basketball at Port St. Joe for three years with a combined record of 51-40 and 13-3 in the state playoffs.
