Schaefer Scores

PANAMA CITY- This season is one to remember for the Covenant Christian Lions, and it’s also one to remember for point guard Justin Schaefer.

“He never really shows a whole lot of emotion, so it’s kind of hard for him to get excited. When he smiles, that’s a lot of excitement for him,” said Covenant head coach Robb Moss.

Justin Schaefer seems really quite and soft spoken upon first impression, but that’s because he does all of his talking on the court.

Justin recently surpassed the 1,000 career points plateau during the Panhandle Christian Conference East Region tournament, and the guy’s only a junior.

“I wasn’t sure how close I was getting. Coach Moss told me when I was getting near it and I got it, and it was a pretty big relief. I didn’t really want to focus on getting 1,000 points, I just really wanted to help the team win,” said junior point guard Justin Schaefer.

Guiding the Lion team to wins is one of the many things Justin is having success at this season.

Their 17 wins this season are the most in school history, and also for the first time, the team is heading to the Conference Final Four Championship, and Schaefer is a big reason why.

“He works his hardest; he’s always striving to be better. He’s really determined, and he’s really passionate about the game. He definitely works very hard to improve himself and improve his teammates,” said senior guard Ben Bingham.

Scoring points in basketball is great and all, but Justin is also the all time assists and steals leader at the school.

“I’m really just trying to help the team win, by doing whatever I can do. If it’s on defense, I try to steal it, if it’s on offense, I try to help others score,” Schaefer said.

“He just has tremendous vision and is very unselfish and always tries to get the ball to the guy in the best position to score,” said Moss.

Justin will have one more year to add to his records, and Coach Moss is thrilled to have him back.

“I know he’ll have another great season and continue to pad some of these numbers that he’s already put up, being our leader in career steals and assists already, and I’m sure he’ll be our career leader in points before he’s all done as well,” Moss said.

“I’m not really thinking about the records. I just want our team to do as good as we can do so we can maybe win the title,” said Schaefer.
