SEC coaches tackle the Raven

DESTIN - A handful of Southeastern Conference football coaches tackled the Raven Golf Course Thursday afternoon.  Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville called it just another day out with his buddies.

Along with Tuberville, South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier and Vanderbilt’s Bobby Johnson got a round in at the Pepsi Pro-Am.

“I’d like to get them all [SEC coaches] out one day at one of these events and have a shootout,” Tuberville said.  “They’re all good guys.”

Tuberville was grouped with Champions Tour rookie and Tour veteran Nick Price.  Tuberville’s team shot a 19-under 52.

“Nick Price was a great guy,” Tuberville said.  “He’s one of my idols over the years, watching him play.  He’s been very consistent.”

Spurrier was teamed with old college pal, pro golfer Andy Bean.  However, the Ole Ball Coach only played 16 holes since his flight earlier than expected.  His buddies definitely gave him a hard time.

“He gets chances, he even gets to play from the up tees now,” Bean said.  “He can put on a skirt and go to the red tees sometimes.”

“I heard he had to catch a plane and didn’t finish,” Tuberville said.  “So I beat him today.”

All 12 SEC coaches were in town for their annual spring meetings at the Sandestin Resort.  The coaches discussed and shot down a proposed early signing period. They also talked about a college football playoff to determine the national champion.

“It’s still a popularity contest at the end of the year,” Tuberville said.  “We need at least a four-team playoff.  There’s no doubt if we had that, an SEC team would have be up there every year.”

The proposed early signing period was endorsed by the ACC and Big 12, but denied by the PAC 10 and SEC.

The first round of the 13th annual Boeing Championship tees off at 8 a.m. Friday.  Tom McNight will have the honors.
