Semi-Pro Football in Panama City

LYNN HAVEN, Fla. - There’s a lot of work that goes into a new franchise; assembling a coaching staff, locating a place to play home games, and most importantly, finding talent.

Sunday, April 23, was the first day of try-outs for the semi-pro football team, the Emerald Coast Jaguars.

The Jaguars play in the North American Football League (NAFL), and are the big brother team of the Emerald Coast Barracudas, the women’s football team in Panama City.

Head Coach Kenny Herbert held the try-out at the Renegade Sports Complex, and expects around 40 to 50 athletes to run through drills similar to the NFL combine.

Coach Herbert said that these young men have the potential to play NCAA Division 1 football, in the Arena League or even the NFL.

But they just need to catch a break.

“We’re they’re second chance,” Herbert said.  “If they didn’t get a college scholarship or get drafted, they can come here to hone their skills.

“We tape all of our games and scouts come to the games.  If they see a player they like, they can contact me.”

The season starts on July 15 vs. the Alachua Saints.
