Sharks’ Defense Shines With Shutouts

PORT ST. JOE, Fla. - With so much credit going to the offensive side of the ball, little attention is given to the defense.

But, Port. St. Joe has something to say about that.

The Sharks ‘D’ has tossed four straight shuts outs.  In fact, they have allowed no points in the last 17 quarters!  That 204 minutes!

“You hope to shut everybody out,” defensive coach Chuck Gannon said.  “Sooner or later, we know somebody will eventually score.  The bottom line, if we’re in the ‘W’ column, that’s the important thing.”

In the month of September alone, Port St. Joe has only allowed 16 points.  The team has not given up a point since the thrid quarter in the victory over Marianna.

Most recently, the 2nd-ranked Sharks blanked Sneads 41-0, only allowing the Pirates into Shark territory four time the entire game.

“Basically it’s a team effort,” lineman Pat Bailey said.  “When that ball is hiked, we just swarm the ball.”

A big reason for the success, senior linebacker Warren Floyd leads the team in tackles and senior lineman Bailey leads the team with five sacks.

“My dad played for the 1968 Chapman High School team in Apalach,” Floyd said.  “He’s the first to tell me it’s not anything special because they shutout most of their opponents out, only allowing 11 yards rushing.  He’s the first to tell me that we’re just okay.”

The Sharks look to continue their defensive stand Friday night against 5th-ranked Liberty County.  Kick-off is 7:30 p.m. EST in Bristol, Fla.
