Team USA Roster Selected
PANAMA CITY - The NJCAA recently announced that a roster of 15 current and former softball standouts will travel to Bangkok, Thailand, August 11-17 to represent the United States in the 2007 World University Games.
Gulf Coast Community College softball coach Susan Painter was named head coach of Team USA earlier this year. But the good news gets better for the Panhandle Conference. Three players from the conference were added to the team; Amanda Byers (GCCC), Sarah Dooley (GCCC) and Sara Lovestrand.
“Now we have to play Japan, boy, they’re tough,” Painter said. “Everybody has been selected and that’s the most challenging job.
“We feel like that’s the hard part and now all the paper work is being completed with the passports being rushed.”
The International University Sports (Universiade) is considered a significant sports ceremony among university students, being equivalent to the Olympic Games. At present, the Universiade hosts Summer and Winter games every two years. The 2007 games will the 24th installment of the event and will feature participants from more than 200 countries in 20 different sporting events.
For the softball portion of the games there will be two pools of five teams participating in a round-robin format. The top four teams from each pool advance to a bracketed tournament which will be played over the final three days of the games.
Team USA/NJCAA will be in Group B with Japan, Australia, Korea and the Czech Republic. Group A is composed of Thailand, Chinese Taipei, South Africa, Canada and Italy. All games will be played at the Softball Stadium at Srinakharinwirot Universiaty and the Softball Field at Thammasat University.
The team will participate in several practice sessions and exhibition games on the Chattanooga State Technical Community College (Tenn.) campus July 11-15.
