The “Dores” are Still Open for a Celebration

PANAMA CITY- “Unbelievable,” said sophomore guard Alexis Givands.

“An honor,” said sophomore forward Dee Liles.

“Relief,” said head coach Roonie Scovel.

That’s just a few words describing how the Lady Commodores feel after winning the Junior College Basketball National Title.

Today, Gulf Coast Community College held a celebration in the Amelia Center Theatre to honor the Lady Commodores great achievement.

Players and coaches are amazed at the support they have.

“It’s just a great feeling. Panama City has been just so great to us. So good to our athletic programs here at gulf coast and for them to come in here and make this a great day for Gulf Coast is just very special to us,” said Scovel.

“That’s great; I didn’t know JUCO basketball could be so fun. I didn’t know that many people were interested, but now I’ve seen for myself,” said Givands.

“It’s just good that we won the championship, and they are supporting us just like we need to be. We brought this back for them, all this is for them,” said Liles.

It’s just a special day for everyone involved with Gulf Coast Athletics, especially after Panama City Mayor Scott Clemons named March 26th as Gulf Coast Community College Women’s Basketball National Championship Day.

Coach Scovel seems like she likes day a little too much.

“It sounds like we just need to take the day off. It sounds like it’s a national holiday.  Hopefully when we get back to the office we will take the rest of the day off, said Scovel.

Taking a day off is something Coach Scovel knows nothing about, and her players think the world of her.

“She’s the soul to this team. She’s everything to this team. She makes us go. She works us hard. We listen to her because she’s a good leader,” said Liles.

“She’s the back bone; she’s who we rely on to get us through tough games when we are down. We depend on her to pick us up,” said Givands.

Some rumors have swirled that the Lady Commodore leader may be leaving, but those rumors aren’t going to last long.

Just to dispel the rumors, we will be back as long as I have a contract next July,” said Scovel.
