Top 100 North Florida Showcase

PANAMA CITY - The Gulf Coast Athletic Association held the first annual Top 100 North Florida Baseball Showcase this Saturday and Sunday at Bill Frazier Field at Gulf Coast Community College.

The event will have the Top 100 players in the 2008 class from Pensacola to Jacksonville, Fla.  The selected players were divided into four regional groups. Each “Region” went through an extensive hour and a half workout for scouts and recruiters.  Following the workouts, each Region played three games.

“Theoretically we have the best players here from Pensacola to Jacksonville,” Gulf Coast Community College head coach Mike Kandler said.  “Obviously some really good players weren’t able to make the event, but we have a pretty good group.”

Players for this event were by invitation only.  They were first recomended by either their a college coach or professional scout.  Those recomendations are reviewed by the GCAA selection committee of college and professional scouts.

“A lot of times, players don’t know what coaches are evaluating,” Kandler said.  “It’s not always the execution of the play, but a lot of times they’re looking at arm strength or foot speed or just how you go about your business.  So we’ve encouraged everybody to go 100% with every thing they do today.”

The goal for this event was to identify the Top 100 class of 2008 players and give them a thorough opportunity to demonstrate their baseball abilities in front of the right audience.
