Two-a-day Practices at Rutherford

SPRINGFIELD - Football is back.  With the beginning of every new season come two-a-day practices.

Just about every school does them and Rutherford High School is no exception; One in the morning, the other in the afternoon.

“To be honest, I don’t like neither one of them,” senior linebacker Reggie Turner said.  “But I’d rather do the morning.  You be fresh and all that.”

“Best practice is probably afternoon,” senior lineman David Hate said.  “The morning is real hot, humid.”

They don’t seem to agree on the better practice schedule, but they do see eye to eye on something.

“Man, it be hot.  You know what I’m saying,” Turner said.

“Real hot,” Hate said.  “You just got to fight through it.”

Both players also agree that these practices will strengthen the team.

“You got to practice a lot to win,” Hate said.  “It’s something we haven’t had a lot at Rutherford.”

Hate has started the last three seasons on both the offensive and defensive lines.  In those years, the Rams are 8-21.

“We can’t go backwards,” assistant coach T.J. Williams said.  “We’re trying to get our identity back.  We will, we will.”

The players can start forming an identity on Thursday morning.  That’s when they go from shorts and a t-shirt to pads and full contact hitting.

“With pads, it’s going down. That’s what’s up,” Turner said.  “I don’t mean to punish them but you know.  That’s my job.  That’s what I do starting tomorrow.”

Rutherford’s first game is on Aug. 31 against Navarre High School at Tommy Oliver Stadium.
