Young Car Owner

FOUNTAIN - This is what father-son bonding is all about.  A hot, Sunday afternoon with Austin and Michael Howard working hard together… on the ten-year-old boy’s car.

“My dad gave it to me when I was a baby,” Austin said.

“This his college fund right here,” Austin’s father, Michael said.

The car is a 1972 Chevrolet Vega.  Michael bought the car in 1984 and has been racing it competitively for two years.  In those two years the car has only lost twice.

“I like it pretty much because it didn’t run in the family, my dad started it by himself,” Austin said.  “It’s like… my car.”

KB: You can’t even drive yet and you’re owner of a car?
AH: i can drive!
KB: Not legally.
AH: nah.

“He owns it,” Michael said.  “He can drive it.”

The extent of Austin driving is pulling the car up to the starting line.  Then Pops takes over on the track; the car hitting a speed of roughly 140 miles per hour!

But Austin does use the car to impress his friends.

“And they be like, ‘I bet you can’t drive it though’,” Austin said.  “Then my dad lets me take it around the block or something like that just to show my friends, let them get in and you know… scare’em.”

It might be scary how much Austin actually knows about cars. 

“We just put another motor back in from using another motor,” Austin said.  “But I help him put the carbonator up, valve covers and everything.”

If Austin doesn’t make it big in the pro racing, I’m sure he’ll be a very successful mechanic.
