Lets Really Help the Juvenile Offenders
I was recently watching a program on the rebuilding of New Orleans after Katrina. I was thinking this would be a great opportunity for surrounding states to changes the lives of young offenders. Could the teens convicted of crimes be made (or Asked) to participate inbuilding homes for those who don’t have one? In my opinion, this could be the point where a life changes. Instead of packing these kids in a prison type environment, they would actually be doing the public a service. This could build their self esteem and teach them a trade thatmay help them begin a life that is productive.
I would like to see more to do to educate and inform young people that life is what make of it. If they want to be gang bangers or hard criminals it will be so. If they just dont have a family environment to cultivate love and charity, this may teach them to reach out to others who may be worde off. I believe that these young minds can be changed to do good and when we see what happened during all these storms in recent years, this is where good would be welcomed. If it is a possibility, they could build house parts here and ship them to devastated areas. The community may even step up to help out.

If you REALLY want to help juvenile offenders - put the boot camp back into business. We NEED it back, and so do the offenders.
ProJustice, I agree. The boot camp does need to be reopened. This would give people back their livelyhood. But instead of the military style attitude, give a chance to change by using their abilities. If a young person is forced to use their hands to help someone else, it will change them. It gives them a sense of accomplishment. Most of the offenders who get sentenced to this place is in shape so all the exercising is not punishment. Seeing how Florida thinks correction is more inportant than punishment for adults shouldn’t it be the same for youths?
I believe that rehabilitaion works for a lot of kids, but the boot camp was for the “baddest of the bad”. Those kids needed what the boot camp had to offer. There is a reason the military has boot camp - it teaches recruits to work as a team, not as an individual. It teaches self respect and a respect for others. After that, rehabilitation might be possible. I know that putting a Martin Lee Anderson into a situation like the aftermath of Katrina could only be adding to the disaster.
good idea
I like the idea of the young offenders learning to put their efforts to good instead of evil. I have also thought about programs like habitat for humanity being a place where these kids could learn to take pride in their work for honest work and truly be appreciated and make a difference.
The current correctional system just seems to fail so many. There are local criminals nearing the age of retirement that have been in and out of the court system since high school. How do we stop this??
I am at wits end with this subject. Instead of reforming these young criminals they seen to end up with a contractor’s license. BEWARE!!
I think it might be a good idea to let some work at community service as their “punishment” but you know the lawyers will be all over this one. They will get hurt and they will sue. They will not be experienced so they will sue. They will not have the right tools so they will sue… And on and on....Right now the simplest way is to put them in jail or release them on parole/probation unfortunately.
