Student Ambassadors Headed for Europe
Ever since November of last year, a group of local students throughout Northwest Florida have been working, planning and readying themselves for the trip of a life time.
They have all been nominated, interviewed, evaluated and selected as People to People, Student Ambassadors and will travel to Europe at the end of June for 20 days visiting England, France, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands and Switzerland.
They will be accompanied by several Adult Leaders who will have their hands full insuring that everyone is safe, on-time and behaving in the manner that is expected.
This excursion is organized through the auspices of People to People, Student Ambassador Programs. You can learn more about this organization by visiting their web site - http://studentambassadors.org.
The picture accompanying this article is of several of our ambassadors at a Pancake Breakfast fundraiser in Fort Walton, last March. Fund Raising is a big part of each student’s pre-departure activity. The trip isn’t free and it take a big commitment from each student and their families to ultimately meet the fund raising goals that are essential for each student’s participation.
Students participating in this adventure are all high school students from Panama City, Chipley, Tallahassee, Fort Walton, Crestview and beyond. Monthly meetings at Rutherford High School have been a golden opportunity for this bunch of kids to get to know people from other places and walks of life… even before embarking on their trip of a lifetime.
The trip includes behind-the-scenes access to things like the House of Parliament. Some groups have even been lucky enough to meet the Queen of England in past years. During their 20+ days of European travel they will have a period of home-stay with local families. This group’s home-stay is in Germany. The home-stay families are all hand picked, vetted and supervised by the People to People organization.
People to People was established in 1956 by President Eisenhower and manages hundreds of trips each year for students ranging from elementary school thru high school.
It looks like our kids will all bring back many wonderful memories from this chance of a lifetime… and we just wanted to share our joy with the community. We will encourage each of our students to post their own follow-up articles upon their return in late July and let everyone know what they saw and what they experienced.
